Marbella's Golden Mile

The Golden Mile

The Golden Mile in Marbella is one of the most renowned luxury real estate stretches in the world. The boulevard, which is actually just over 6km long, starts at the western edge of Marbella City (Plaza Bocanegra) and extends along to Rio Verde and Puerto Banús.

Lined with palm trees, with views of both the mountains and the sea, it is home to some of the most luxurious apartments and properties in Spain. Together with beachfront villas and exclusive residential urbanizations, the Golden Mile includes the Mar-Mar Palace. Built in the 1980s and modelled on the White House – it was (prior to his death in 2005) the frequent summer residence of King Fahd of Saudi Arabia.

The property is still regularly used by other members of the Saudi Royal Family – they own another palace close by; and their yachts can be seen docked in nearby Puerto Banús. Overlooking the mile is the Marbella Mosque a stunning Arabian temple – officially named the King Abdul Aziz Mosque and opened in 1981.

In addition to its exclusive developments and its famous residences and residents, it is also home to several legendary hotels including the Marbella Club, Puente Romano, and Melia Don Pepe. Alongside these, it boasts some of the best restaurants, art galleries, nightclubs, and beach clubs on the Costa del Sol.

The area first came to prominence in the 1954 when Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe built the Marbella Club Hotel. When it first opened it was a remote get away accessible only by a few. It immediately became the go-to retreat of celebrities and royalty alike, and has in its time hosted Audrey Hepburn, Sean Connery, and the Duke of Windsor amongst others. Its rich clientele loved the area so much they started buying property and commissioning glamorous builds around the resort – and the Golden Mile was born.

The Golden Mile is separated by the A-7 highway, which was the original N-340 coastal road, and the only route from Malaga right through to Gibraltar. Now there is a toll road that services a lot of the traffic. On the side of the highway, you will find businesses, commercial centres, designer shops, and golf courses.

Beachside of the highway expanded hugely during the tourism boom of the 1960s and is now completely developed. Here you will find urbanizations such as Alhambra del Mar, La Alcazaba, Las Torres, Los Verdiales, Marbellamar, Marina Marbella, Oasis, Rio Verde, and Santa Margarita.

Mountainside building work is still being undertaken. New properties are being developed in residential areas such as Sierra Blanca, Nagueles, Coto Real, and Ancon Sierra.

The Golden Mile will always be synonymous with glamour, luxury, exclusivity, and the aristocratic jet set lifestyle - long may it stay that way.
